Many seem to imagine that IoT will deliver them a Harry
Potter-esque “Marauder’s Map” — a magical dashboard by which they can
see, track, and manage every “thing” where things are treated
generically. Tracking chips have been around for decades. Although
they’re technically viable, the generic commercial use case remains
problematic. Early cycle racing technologies, which were effectively IoT
by another name, can illuminate some of these problems and suggest
solutions.
