Virtual IoT sensors and their purpose in an ecosystem

There are two categories of Internet of Things (IoT) sensors namely physical sensors and software based sensors. The latter are also referred to as virtual IoT senors. These virtual senors base their output and operation on aggregated calculations of one or more underlying physical sensors or alternatively they process data input and provide a new interpreted value. An integral part of the operation of a virtual IoT sensor is to post the data as an output to a database where it can be accessed by an API and displayed on a portal.
