Life was simple. The phone was a black Bakerlite with a manual dialler.
You could take this out of a phone and ask your friends to hold it while
you shocked the living daylights out of them. The phone was attached by
15km of copper lines to the nearest town. The lines attached to poles
at regular intervals would hum and would be the best place to spot the
local bird life.
