The Bagpipes originated sometime in the late medieval times and have
become Scotland's national instrument. They are blown by mouth with the
bags traditionally being made from the skin of a sheep and the pipes
from bone or ivory. In modern times synthetic materials are the norm for
the bags and hardwood, often African Blackwood, for the pipes. The
melody is played on a reeded chanter leading down from the bag while
three drone pipes sit on the piper's shoulder and provide a constant
noise as a background to the melody.
